Your corner – Work trip: how to work AND have fun

I started my internship about a month ago and now I’m going to Germany for work. Not everyone is going to get this opportunity but those of you who do… Listen up!

You’re going to another office, this is your chance to prove yourself and make some connections.

Early morning plane journey and then straight into work, my advice just have coffee and make it work because no one likes to see a tired face.

As soon as I arrived, I was giving a tour of the office which meant that I was introduced to people and my favourite advice works here; smile and talk to people because networking can take you forward.

Main tips for a work trip abroad: 1. Coffee and food to keep you going 2. Dress to impress 3. Smile and network 4. Forget sleep for those days because you won't get these chances again

While at work I was required to do a range of tasks, as my role is Business Development, I have to look into the Marketing as well and one of the main projects that I was working on was to analyse the income of selected regions to see whether they should be targeted or not. While working on this, I also had smaller tasks such as purchasing, contacting partners, getting updates on orders as well as updating paperwork and the Dropbox with the latest documents.

In the evening we had a BBQ with office people and I tried speaking to new people and introduced myself. This was a good way to prep for the party.

Stay for as long as you can because these opportunities don’t always come up!

Next day was work work work (like the Rihanna song) but coffee and food kept me going and it’ll help you too. When you’re working and you’re unsure about something don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Then came the big party night with all the office invited, I was confused about what to wear but remember only one rule applies dress to impress ? Preparing for something like this can be quite hard as you can be nervous but the trick is to try and use the people you know to get to know more people. For e.g. when my manager was talking to someone I would join in and start talking and try and socialise (make sure you’re not interrupting when joining the conversation).

The party was another opportunity to network but to also have some fun at work and just chill out…

It was a 3 day trip so I was leaving next day but I stayed up for as long as I could because I knew when I went back home I could sleep but this opportunity wouldn’t arise again.
